“HIV does not discriminate who
it attacks. Children, teenagers and
adults – everyone should have access
to the right support.”

                         – Mohamed Al Fayed

Despite a high-profile government campaign in the 1980s and the dedicated work of people in the public eye, from Diana, Princess of Wales to Sir Elton John, the sad reality is that the numbers of those suffering from AIDS and HIV are still on the increase, and it remains an isolating and highly stigmatised disease with around 73,000 people in the UK being HIV+.

Body & Soul is a charity that is dedicated to improving the lives of children, teenagers and parents in the UK living with, or closely-affected by, HIV. It aims to help by providing information and physical and emotional support to over 200 people each week, helping them not only remain active members of the community, but to better manage the direct and indirect effects of HIV on their day to day lives.

When Mr Al Fayed heard that demand for their services had seen Body and Soul outgrow their original home, he pledged a considerable sum to help finance the building of new premises. Now open, the London-based centre is able to provide more families and individuals with the kind of counselling, peer and professional support, as well as holistic therapy that will help them manage the impact of HIV.

What you can do
Volunteer: you can make a real difference to the lives of people that need your help. Body & Soul relies on volunteers across all its services. Without them, it could not continue to help as many people as it does each week.
